Harrison Flats, A Legacy for Italy

"Harrison Flats – A Legacy for Italy" was written by Lt. E. J. Devrey who was
assigned to the 460th Bomb Group of the 55th Bombardment Wing of the 15th Air Force. The story tells
a typical example of building Army Air Corps bases all over Southern Italy during World War II. This essay
describes the building of the Spinazzola Air Base, which was the home of the 460th Bomb Group, and
was actually located near the small village of Poggiorsini on private farmland, now called the Lorusso
Farms, on road SR97. It was here that the ground support personnel and the aircrews lived and slept while
executing the war effort. About a mile further down road SR97, the flight line, taxiways, aircraft parking,
the tower, maintenance facilities and munitions storage were established and maintained. A photo album
on this site and other typical images of base conditions will provide the viewer with a visual perspective
of the difficult conditions under which military personnel lived and worked.
The land has now all been returned to its natural farming condition and only a faint
outline of the runway can be seen today in a search of Google Maps©.
This document was found in the operational history of the 460th Bomb Group history
now on microfilm, declassified in 1973, at the AFHRA Center, Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

A 15-ös Légierők 55-ös Bombázó Szárnyához
tartozó 460-as számú Bombázó Csoport egyik tagja, E.J. Devrey főhadnagy
írta a "Harrison Sík – Olaszország öröksége" című
történetet. Szemlélteti benne a Légierők egy tipikus bázisának
a felépitését Dél-olaszországban, amely egy volt a sok közül a
második világháború alatt. Leírja a 460-as Bombázó Csoport
Spinazzola nevű légi bázisának a létesítését magánkézben
lévő termőföldön, Poggiorsini falu közelében, amelyet ma Lorusso
birtok néven ismerünk az SR97-es út mentén. Ezen a bázison laktak a
pilóták és az őket kiszolgáló személyzet, miközben
végrehajtották a háború alatt rájuk rótt kötelezettségeket.
Megépitették és karban tartották a kifutó pályákat, a repülőgépek
parkoló helyeit, az irányító tornyot, a javító műhelyeket és
a robbanóanyagok raktárát körülbelül egy mérföldnyire a
birtoktól az út mentén. A "Fényképalbum"-ban található
felvételek erről a bázisról, valamint más bázisokról készült
tipikus képek kellően illusztrálják a legénység életének
és munkájának nehézségeit a háború folyamán.
Ma ujra termőföld ez a vidék, és a Google Earth©
térképén a kifutó pályának csak egy halvány körvonala
látható.
Ez a document a 460-as Bombázó Csoport történetének
a leírásában található mikrofilmen az AFHRA Központban, a Maxwell
Légibázison Alabama államban. Az eredeti reportot 1973-ban oldották fel a titkossági
tilalom alól.
Nagyon hasznos lenne a magyarra való fordítás, hogy az angol
nyelvet nem beszélő személyek is olvashassák ezt az elbeszélést
bárhol a világon. Ha többen vállalkoznának egy-egy oldal lefordítására,
hamarabb elkészülne, s a honlap szerkesztője össze tudná állitani
