Introduction

These pages describe the events of Sunday, March 4, 1945
over the Cathedral and City of Szombathely. The story is told in a narrative form
from information gathered in Szombathely, from the Bishops Archives, newspaper
accounts, as well as from Army Air Force historical records and Bomb Group historians
here in the United States.
I wish to thank Ilona Posfai, Nandor Bokor, and
Elizabeth Magay for their help in translating the following pages into Hungarian
and English.
The readers' interest in this site and your help with
translations (into English or Hungarian) would be most appreciated on a page-by-page
basis, via .pdf files over the Internet. Please contact us at the below address.
Credits will be noted on all work submitted. Proofing of submissions for military
terms and other particulars will be done here in the States for correctness and
readability. Footnotes, references and historical documents will be added to the
site as translations become available.
In September of 2008, I will be in Szombathely to gather
additional personal accounts and information, copies of documents, and to re-photograph
images that may be held by individual families in Szombathely concerning the following
areas of interest:
A. Damages to the cathedral (exterior or interior photographs,
documents).
B. Reconstruction period to September 7, 1947 (exterior or
interior photographs, documents).
C. Workmen at the Cathedral during reconstruction (names
and photographs).
D. The Day of Rededication (photographs inside the church
and the worshipers outside and any newspaper articles of the day).
E. The name of the woman who survived the explosion at the
small Pulpit.

Ez az elbeszélés összegyüjtött adatokat tartalmaz
részben a Szombathelyi Püspöki Levéltárból és
ujságcikkekből, valamint a Légierők és a bombázó
csoportok történészei tulajdonában lévő történelmi
dokumentumokból itt az Egyesült államokban. Az az napi bombázás
leirása szemtanuk nyilatkozata alapján élénken érzékelteti
a Székesegyházban okozott kárt.
Szeretnék köszönetet mondani
Pósfai Ilonának, Bokor Nándornak és Magay Erzsébetnek

Nagyra értékeljük az olvasó érdeklődését,

2008 szeptemberében Szombathelyre utazom, hogy
még újabb információt gyüjthessek szemtanuk
elbeszéléséből és egyéb adataiból,
akkori dokumentumok és fényképek másolataiból,
amelyek esetleg szombathelyi családok gyüjteményében
még megtalálhatók. Az alább felsorolt témák
különösen érdekelnek:
a. A Székesegyház romjai (külső
és belső fényképek és dokumentumok)
b. Az ujjáépités időszaka 1947.
szeptember 7.-ig (külső és belső fényképek
és dokumentumok)
c. A Székesegyházat újjáépitő
munkások (nevek és fényképek)
d. Az újjászentelés napja (fényképek
a templom belsejéből és a hivekről a templomtéren,
valamint ujságcikkek)
e. Annak az asszonynak a neve, aki túlélte a
bombázást a kis szószék alatt.
