The Final Chapter

The following document contains military records (not previously posted), damage assessment
photographs and Bomb Plots from the March 4, 1945 mission to Szombathely. The reader will also find a Floor
Plan, photographs of the B-24 Liberator interiors and pictures of munitions of the type that were used that day in
1945. I have also included many images of the Before, After and Today views of particular points of interest within
the cathedral.
The reader will also find a summary of key points from the events of this day, my conclusions
based on four years of research that gathered information from microfilm held by the Air Force Historical Research
Center, Alabama, records kept by the Historians of the Bomb Groups involved this day, as well as other contributing
Bomb Groups outside of the 15th Air Force, and the photographs and documents held by the Bishop’s Archives
of the cathedral in Szombathely.
Although some questions will always remain unanswered, the viewer is invited to mine these
pages, and hopefully will find answers or follow new avenues in their own process of discovery.
I close these pages with a challenge to the Good Citizens of Szombathely to help me begin
new story of the cathedral’s re-birth and rededication in 1947. A magnificent story of the indwelling of the Divine
Spirit working through his most dedicated Cardinal and Bishop then, to alight a flame in the hearts and minds of
the workmen and citizenry of this community and of the surrounding areas, to rebuild God’s Temple without delay.
This initial work was completed in 2 ½ years and continues on, even to this very day.
Unlike earlier pages of the website, the following link will contain both the English and Hungarian
translations together due the large number of illustrations and photographs that will be presented and referenced
next.
I wish to thank my few translators here and abroad who have helped me over these past four
years and have given of their precious time to make this web site possible. Without them and their language skills,
the web site would probably have not reached it’s present readership.
Over the summer of 2010, I have created new Photo Albums in Google’s "Picasa Web
Albums," that will contain additional photographs and history about the pictures. Links to my Picasa Albums

Az alább található hadügyi okiratok (amelyek eddig nem szerepeltek ezen
a honlapon) felmérik a kárt és feltérképezik a ledobott bombák
pozícióját az 1945. március 4-i Szombathely-i bombázásról.
Továbbá egy alaprajz, a B-24-es Liberátorokat kívülről és belülről
ábrázoló fényképek, valamint robbanószerek képei láthatók,
amelyek hasonlóak az aznapi bombázáskor használtakkal. Ugyancsak ide csatoltam
fényképeket a Székesegyház belsejének sajátos részeiről,
illusztrálva a bombázás előtti, utáni és a 65 évvel későbbi
látványt.
Összefoglaltam ennek a napnak a fő eseményeit, és
megírtam a négy év alatt összegyüjtött adatokból levont
következtetéseimet. Főbb forrásaim: Az Amerikai Légierők
Történelmi Kutatóintézete Alabama államban; az az napi bevetésben
résztvevő Bombázó Csoportok történészei; a 15-ös
Légierőkön kívül működő további Bombázó
Csoportok gyüjteményei; fényképek és dokumentumok a Szombathelyi Püspöki
Levéltárból.
Ha marad is olyan kérdés, amelyet nem tudtam megfelelően feltárni,
szivesen fogadom az olvasók érdeklődését, hogy találjanak magyarázatot
a saját kérdéseikre, vagy a honlap vezesse őket egy új felfedezéshez.
A szombathelyi polgárok segitségét szeretném kérni egy
új fejezet megírásához a Székesegyház ujjászületéséről
és ujjászenteléséről 1947-ben. Ez egy rendkívüli történet
az Isteni sugallatról, amely az akkori érsek és Püspök teljes odaadásán
keresztül fellelkesitette a város és környék munkásait és lakosságát,
hogy minden késlekedés nélkül ujjáépitsék a templomot. A külső
falak és mennyezet elkészült két és fél év alatt, s a további munka
folytatódott hat évtizeden keresztül.
E lap alján található linkek kapcsolódnak egyben az angol és
magyar szövegekhez, eltérően a honlap előző lapjaitól. Ez a megoldás
sok illusztráció és fénykép miatt vált szükségessé.
Szeretnék köszönetet mondani a fordítóknak itt és
külföldön egyaránt, akik hozzásegitettek a honlap kidolgozásához az
elmult négy év folyamán. Az ő odaadó közreműködésük
nélkül valószínüleg kevesebb olvasót vonzott volna a honlap.
2010 nyarán újabb fotoalbumokat állitottam össze a Google "Picasa
Web Albums" címen, ahol fényképek és történelmi adatok találhatók.
