Rededication

The following pages tell the story of the day’s events in Szombathely
on September 7, 1947. The Sunday rededication activities that went into the early
morning hours of the following Monday were combined with the Marian Celebration
(the Feast Day of Mary) held the next day in the city.
This would take advantage of the presence of all the clergy,
the many bishops, Cardinal Mindszenty and the multitude of thousands of
believers that had gathered for the Rededication of the Cathedral. The work was
written by István Toronyi and published as "Szombathely Ünnepe"
(Szombathely Celebration) in 1947.
Fr. Toronyi was a priest at the Cathedral. He was able to
move about during the celebrations to record his notes and observations. This
very vivid and accurate account, including excerpts from the homilies that were
delivered this day, speak well of the good citizens of the city and the Diocese at
large. His descriptions are photographic and will take the reader back 61 years
in time to this historic date, two years after the bombing and will leave the reader
with the feeling of having been present at this historic moment.

undertaking a translation project of 11,910 words as a labor of love and interest
in this story: Elizabeth Avvakumovits, Elizabeth Magay, Otto Avvakumovits,
Ilona Pósfai, and Nándor Bokor. For time and energy to this work, I

This information was provided by the Bishop’s Archives in Szombathely,
Hungary. The book has long been out of print but is still an accurate depiction of
the events on the day of Re-dedication in September 1947.
The Marian Celebration on the following Monday will be
added in both languages when available. The working copies that were obtained
by us from the original, were computer enhanced to remove markings and notations
that were made by readers of these documents over the past 60 plus years. The
Archive Stamp was left intact on page 17 specifying the holder of the working
copies.
I wish to thank the staff at the Archives for their help in
making this recorded history available to new readers and generations far removed
from the actual events both in time and place.
The Marian Celebration
The following document "Szombathely Ünnepe – part III" is the last chapter
of a book written by Toronyi Németh István which describes the events of the following Monday
as part of the two days of Rededication activities over September 7-8, 1947.
I wish to thank the personel of the Berzsenyi Dániel Künyvtár in
Szombathely for their assistance in finding this elusive document.
The document is only available in Hungarian at this time, and I trust that visitors to
this site, because of their interest, will help with an English translation of this important record of these
events. Please contact the Project Manager if you can help with translating a few of these pages.
The Rededication Events brought over 100,000 persons to the Főtér at
Szombathely on Monday the 8th. A photo album of the
activities that day is available on this web site.

Székesegyház vasárnapi ujjászentelésének
ünnepségei belenyúltak a hétfői nap kora hajnali
óráiba, és összekapcsolódtak a Mária
Kongresszus ünnepségeivel Kisboldogasszony napján.
A Székesegyház ujjászentelésére
összegyűlt papság, püspökök és
Mindszenty József bíboros, valamint a sok tizezer hivő
és zarándok részt vehetett a Szűz Mária tiszteletére
rendezett ünnepségeken is. Toronyi Németh István örökitette
meg ennek a két napnak az eseményeit az 1947-ben kiadott "Szombathely Ünnepe"
című könyvében.
Toronyi, a pap-költő és író, mint
a helyi papság tagja, közvetlen résztvevője volt minden
eseménynek, és személyes megfigyeléseit feljegyezhette.
Leírása pontos és szemléltető, és a vasárnap
elhangzott szentbeszédeket is tartalmazza. A könyv elismeréssel
és tisztelettel beszél a város lakosságáról
és az Egyházmegye híveiről. írásai elevenek,
és szinte visszaszállítják az olvasót a 61 évvel
ezelőtt lejátszódó történelmi fontosságú
eseményekhez, amelyek két évvel a Székesegyház
lebombázása után történtek. Az olvasó úgy

nem adták ki.

később fogjuk közölni. Az eredeti könyv lemásolt
oldalait számítógép segitségével feljavitottuk,
eltüntetve a lapok olvasóinak több mint hatvan év alatt írt
jegyzeteit. A Levéltár pecsétjét a 17. oldalon megőriztük,
ezzel hitelesitve a lapok eredetét.

Az alább olvasható dokumentum "Szombathely Ünnepe – III.
rész" Toronyi Németh István könyvének az utolsó fejezete,
amelyben leirja a vasárnapi ujjászentelés és a hétfői Mária
Kongresszus két napos Ünnepség sorozatát (1947. szeptember 7 és 8).
