Memories of 1947

Over the Christmas Holidays, I received an E-mail from Paul Kalotay expressing his interest in the web site: The
March 4, 1945 Szombathely Cathedral Bombing Project. As a young man growing up in Szombathely, he remembered vividly from
his youth, the bombing of the city, it’s renowned cathedral, and the occupation by the Russians troops who remained for over 44
years after the war. He specifically had detailed memories of the period of reconstruction and the two day celebrations at the time
of the rededication of the cathedral on the seventh of September 1947 and the following days events on the town square where
over 100,000 people gathered for the Marian Congress and to listen to Cardinal Mendszenty addressing the great gathering.
A small electronic organ had been purchased and shipped from the United States by American Hungarians
living there, which had arrived just in time at the train station days before the Re-Consecration service. It required to be transported
to the cathedral, reassembled in the organ loft and tested just prior to the great morning event on Sunday, September 7th. 1947.
As an insider to the preparations to these events in 1947, he was part of a small crew of young men who were
charged with the wiring and sound systems that were going to be needed both inside the cathedral on Sunday’s Rededication
Service, and for the many thousands of participants who would not be able to get into the cathedral on Sunday morning but would
instead be able to hear the great celebration standing outside in the "Cathedral Square" and overflowing into the streets
leading away from the cathedral.
The Főtér (or main square) had been wired in advance but the amplifiers, microphone and
several large speaker required removal and reinstallation at the new outside venue for the events to be held on the following Monday
(The Marian Congress of 1947).

Karácsonytájt kaptam egy e-mailt Kalotay Páltól, aki a szombathelyí Nagytemplom
1945 március 4-i bombázásával kapcsolatos weblap iránt érdeklődött. Szombathelyen
nőtt fel, és jól emlékezett fiatal korára, a város és nevezetes temploma bombázására,
és a megszálló oroszokra, akik 44 évig ott "vendégeskedtek" a háború után.
Különösen jól emlékezett a Székesegyház újjáépítésére,
és amikor 1947 szeptember 7-én és 8-án 100.000-nél is többen gyűltek össze a
Nagytemplom felszentelésére és a másnapi Mária Kongresszusra, meghallgatni Mindszenty
hercegprímás ünnepi beszédét.
Az Amerikában élő vasmegyei magyarok egy kisebb méretű elektronikus
orgonát vásároltak és küldtek Szombathelyre. Az orgona épp időben érkezett
meg az állomásra, röviddel az újraszentelés előtt. Be kellett szállítani a templomhoz,
fel a kórusra, összeállítani és kipróbálni, még a szeptember 7-i vasárnapi
nagy események előtt.
Tagja volt annak a kis csoportnak akik előre előkészítették a hangszóró
hálózat vezetékeit a Székesegyházban a vasárnapi szentelésre és a templomon
kívülrekedtek számára, hogy ők is hallhassák az ünnepélyes eseményeket
a Nagytemplom előtti téren és a környező utcákban.
A Főteret is elő kellett készíteni, mert az erősítőket, hangszórókat,
mikrofont a hétfői Mária-kongresszusra csak a vasárnapi felszentelés után lehetett áthozni.
